Section 232 tariffs on passenger vehicles, light trucks and auto parts

In effect (status checked Oct 16, 2026, the last day we checked the Federal Register for later documents).

Proclamation 10908 (90 FR 14705): “and shall continue in effect, unless such actions are expressly reduced, modified, or terminated.”

Proclamation 10908 imposed a 25% section 232 tariff on imported passenger vehicles and light trucks from April 3, 2025, and on listed automobile parts from May 3, 2025, in addition to other duties. USMCA-qualifying automobiles can pay the 25% only on non-U.S. content once Commerce approves; USMCA-qualifying parts are not charged until Commerce publishes a non-U.S.-content process, and an August 2026 Commerce notice states that it does not establish that process. Executive Order 14289 keeps steel and aluminum section 232 duties from being added on top. Later documents set partner rates: 7.5% plus the 2.5% MFN rate for UK cars within a quota, and a 15% rate inclusive of MFN for automobiles and parts from the EU, Japan and Korea and for certain Taiwanese parts. U.S. assemblers can claim a parts-tariff offset through April 30, 2030.
